NOTES ON THE RACING

[By St. Clair.] The weather was dull and several light showers fell during the afternoon, but not sufficient to spoil the pleasure of the afternoon’s sport. The attendance was again good, the gate receipts amounting to £368 7s 6d, as against £2Bl 3s on the off day last year. -The totalisator handled £14,689, as compared with £8,454 last year, making £35,797$ for the meeting, an increase of £11,099 on last year’s turnover. The public were again treated to a good day’s racing, but backers of favourites did not have such a good time as on Monday, as only two first favourites succeeded. Horses from Win gatui stables again won five of the six racing and the local owner, Mr G. J Barton, was the best winner, his horses securing lour races during the meeting. Mr M‘ Ivor’s starting was again right up to his best standard, and Mr Ireland gave his decisions promptly in the sev era! close finishes he had to decide, which reflected credit on Mr Gibbs’s handicapping. The meeting was well managed, and was one of the most successful' the club has held for some years. An inquiry was held into the alleged interference by Royal Flower with Some Toff about three and a-half furlongs from home in the Gordon Hack Handicap, and after hearing evidence the Judicial Committee decided that the charge was not proven. With regard to the interference soon after the start which caused Town Major to drop back there was not sufficient evidence to permit the committee to take action.

The going was too hard to start Heather Lad in the Wantwood Hurdles, and the heavy betting was evenly divided between Beauty Light and An trim Boy, the former being favourite by a fen tickets; and Nincompoop was the best fancied of the others. The race was again started at the five-fur-long post, and Antrim Boy led Ail Smiles to the first fence, then the latter went out in front, and led Antrim Boy, Nincompoop, and Parader over the two hurdles m tne straight. All Smiles hit the hurdle near the seven-furlong post, and' Nincompoop and Antrim Boy wont out in front well clear of Beauty Light- and Parader. Nincompoop took charge at the far turn, where the favourite moved up, and was on terms with Antrim Boy, a length behind Nincompoop, at the home turn. These three were practically on terms at the last fence, and in the run home Antrim Boy beat Nincompoop by half a length. Beauty Light was tour lengths away third, and Parader a poor fourth. In vestments, £l,lolf (last year £717).

After passing the

five-furlong post Royal Flower went up to Some Toff, and the pair led Sailing Home and Jock o’ Hazeldean round the far turn and across the top. Jock o’ Hazeldean joined Some Toff and Royal Flower at the top of the straight, and in a splendid struggle down the run ning Royal Flower beat Jock o’ Hazel dean by a nose, with Some Toff a similar distance away third. Takaka, Barndoor, and Dumblane were next. Investments, £1,833$ (£1,084).

Erin’s Fortune was backed down to nearly an even-money price in the Otama Saddle Trot, being almost twice as well supported as Alva Lass, with Tarndale, Imperial Bingen, and Nelbar the best fancied of the others. Alva Lass led Maybird and Nelbar over the first three furlongs, and passing the stand the leaders were Alva Lass, Maybird, Streak, Tarndale, and the favourite all bunched. Tarndale. followed by Erin’s Fortune, ran into second place going to the six-furlong past, and at the far turn Tarndale had taken charge from Alva Lass and Nelbar, the favour ite dropping back beaten. Going across the top Maybird moved un and followed Tarndale into the straight with Nelbar and Alva Lass next. At the distance post-Maybird had Tarndale in trouble, and beat him home by a length. - Nelbar was four lengths away third, followed by 'Winnie Chrysler. Streak, and Alva Lass. Investments, £1,807 (£1,2295).

Red Racer and Town Major were withdrawn from the Waikaka Handicap, and Royal Saxon was sent out better backed than Money Mine, Tembroney, or Narrative, who were evenly fancied; and Queen Balboa, who was very sore, was the outsider of the fide Royal Saxon led through the straignt from Money Mine and Tembroney, who were running together, just in front of Narrative, and this was the order ier the first half-mile. Racing to the far turn Narrative moved up and joined Tembroney and the favourite, and this pair raced across the top and into the straight abreast, and just in front of Money Mine. At _ the distance post Tembroney showed in front, and. Narrative dropping back, Money Mine commenced a good run. He finished very gamely, and just got up to beat Tembroney by half a head. Royal Saxon was a head away third. Some Rose and Narrative were next. Investments, £1,846} (£576).

In a field of fifteen in the Novice Handicap Wig Wag was made a better favourite than Abbeville, who was nearly twice as well backed as Captivate or Impertinence, the best fancied of the others. The favourite got chopped out at the start from which Impertinence, Some Maid and Captivate were the smartest away. Captivate took charge after going a couple of furlongs, and led Impertinence, Abbeville, Ohai, and Some Maid round the far turn. Before turning into the straight Abbeville headed Impertinence and Captivate, and at the distance post drew out to win easily by three lengths from Captivate. Impertinence was two lengths further back third, followed by Wig Wag, Some Maid, and a Dandv next. Investments. £1,727 (£9391). # . , .

Ell Boa was made a much better favourite than inevitable or Red Sea in the Stewards’ Hack Handicap, with only Blue Metal of the others well backed. Inevitable and Red Sea were the smartest to jump out, but alter going a furlong Full Fling ran up on the outside of Red Sea, and this pair led Ell Boa and Insolence along the back. This was also the order rounding the far turn, and racing across the top Blue Metal had drifted to second last place. Ell Boa took charge at the home turn, and had Red Sea and Inevitable her nearest attendants. Ell Boa drew out in the straight to win by over a length from Blue Metal, who finished very fast and just beat Red Sea by a good head for second money. Flying Binge and Inevitable were next. Investments, £1,845 (£1,079).

Almout Cling, with J. M'Lennan in the sulky, was better backed than Bay Admiral in the Balfour Harness Trot, and Young Nora, Doncliff, Speckled Gold, and Blackfriar were the best backed of the others. The favourite was in charge from Tussore Silk, Bingesia, Bay Admiral, and Doncliff passing the stand, at the end ot two furlongs, and going into the back stretch was just clear from Doncliff and Bay Admiral. At the far turn these three had drawn right away from the others and the favourite, on the rails, was slightly in front of Doncliff and Bay Admiral Dnnclif! dropped out at the distance, and Bay Admiral b-nt Alniont Cling over the last few strides by a short neck. Doncliff was five lengths away third, and at long intervals followed Jerelderie, Thrift, and Blackfriar. Investments, £2,059$ (£1,5034). The winner met with a very mixed reception on returning to tho enclosure, and his performance was certainly a great improvement on what he showed the first day, when he failed to go away from the start smartly enough to have any chance in the remainder of the contest.

Royal Saxon and Some Rose were withdrawn from the Charlton Handicap, for which Glenrowan, who had a 31b allowance, was sent out a good favourite, with Tardy, Coomassie, who put up 61b overweight to secure L. J. Ellis’s services, Membo, and Evening were the next fannied. Wayward led Red Racer and Membo past the stand, and turning into the back Red Racer and Wayward led Cupid’s Dart. Going to the far turn Evening moved up and joined Wavward racing across the top, this pair leading the favourite into the straight. Glenrowan and Membo joined Evening at tin distance post, and in a stirring finish Glenrowan gained a head verdict from Membo. who beat Evening by half a head. Tardy and Red Racer were next. The winner gave S. G. Ware his seventh win at the meeting. Investments, £2,469 (£1,3255). .
