“FRIVOLOUS” WRITS
PRACTISE IH ELECTIONS PROTEST BY PRESS REPRESENTATIVES. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, October 26. (Receiver October 26, at 9 a.m.) Delegates from the New South Wales country 1 Press waited on the Premier (Mr Bavin) and requested an amendment to the law relating to defamation, claiming that a practice had grown up during election for the issue of “ ffivo-. lous ” writs against newspapers, ostensibly with the object of stifling criticism of candidates, the writs being withdrawn as soon as the elections were over.
Air Bavin replied that the matter was of immense public importance, and promised to obtain the best legal advice as to whether an amendment such as was desired could be made without restricting the rights of persons desir-i-g to use court processes legitimately.
