TURKISH ALPHABET

HE NEW CHARACTERS NEWSPAPERS ADOPT NEW STYLE. Press Association—By Telegraph-Copyright. LONDON, December 2. The Constantinople correspondent of ‘The Times’ reports that, one outcome of the inauguration of the now Roman characters is prolonged cinema sessions. The captions are accompanied by explanations which the spectators do not readily grasp, and they insist on the words remaining on the screen so long that the performances are much extended. Tho newspapers quickly _ adapted themselves to tho new conditions, and appeared to-day modelled on those of London and Paris. They have instituted whole-page photographs. The circulations have fallen heavily. There is time to read only one newspaper, but the public plods through a journal because it is recognised that the reading of newspapers is the most practical method of becoming accustomed to the new alphabet. The newspapers have imported modern machinery for the change, and have decided to adopt the Western make-up. Thus the new characters have entirely revolutionised tho Turkish Press.—London ‘ Times ' Cable.
