EMPIRE THEATRE

PRESENT NAME RETAINED 20,000 ENTRIES IN COMPETITION THE WINNERS. Tbe result of the competition to rO* name the Empire Theatre was announced last evening before a crowded audience. The name selected by the judges was ‘‘ Eastern Palace,” which was given by fourteen competitors, and the prize money of £IOO 'will bo divided accordingly. “ Eastern Star ” was selected for the second prize of £SO, which will be divided among three contestants.

Among the names entered was the present name of the theatre, but the votes that carried this were considered invalid, as the management had made it a rule that only new names would he considered.

In perusing the 20,000 entries (in the presence of the company’s solicitor and the police) the judges found nothing more suitable thaff the present name, and it wa„ decided that this should bo retained.

For the first prize ol £.IOO the following were successful in suggesting the winning name of “ Eastern Palace ” : Mrs R. .Gumming, 481 Anderson’s Bay road; Mrs E. Wilkinson, 15 Clyde street; Mrs Mat-homo, 4 Kilgonr street, Roslyn; I). Reid, 121 Forth street; Mrs'S. Hastio. 702 George street; Mrs R. Fleming, 18 Broughton street, South Dunedin; M. Mathie, 50 Calder street, St. Kilda; W. A. Grant, 308 Cumberland street; Miss Margaret Walker, 8 St. David street; Miss L. Brown. Cottage Hospital, Port Chalmers; Mrs R. C. Wilson, 21 Allandale road. St. Clair; Mrs C. E. Davies, 59 Musselburgh Rise; C. O’Donoghue, National Bank, Dunedin; Miss L. Tonkin, Oamaru. The winners of the second prize of £SO, “ Eastern Star,” were as follow: Miss Ruby Muntz. 192 Cargill street. Dunedin; Mrs J. Cockburn, 529 Anderson’s Bay road; Mrs A. Watt, 38 Norwood street, Normanby.
