BOWLING

[By Measures.]

Tho interclub matches started under tho best of conditions last Saturday, and many interesting games took place. Several clubs gained the possible 12 points, while others failed to score at all. Only a portion of the results were supplied to the Press, so it is impossible to make full comments. Caledonian started with all wins—three sections against Kaikorai and one against Outran!. The Caledonian players, who have entered only four sections this season as against five last, aro sure to be prominent, for they can muster rinks which are strong from leads to skip?. The most successful teams last week were led by Beatson, Claridge, Lloyd, D. Scott, and \V. Latham.

Dunedin Club put up a good performance with five wins out of six sections, the opponents being Leith and Kaituna. The young Leith Club could hardly expect to win against its more experienced opponents, but there is no cause for despondency in losing. When Leith is as old as Dunedin it is likely that it will be nearer the top than at present. Kaituna, as was expected, put up a better showing, but their plavers found it hard to win even one of tho throe sections, G. Nelson’s substantial lead over T. Sanders making it difficult for L leaton’s and Payne’s rinks to wipe off the deficit and win by 3 points. E. Harrnway, J. D. Smith, Gardiner, and Morrison were skips who had big leads against Leith; and Neill had a great advantage in tho Kaituna game. Balmacewen players were altogether too strong for . Otago, a narticularly wido margin being J. Adamson’s lead of 38 to Watts’s 9. Tho latter cannot have found his touch yet. Tho Balmacewen men also won handily against West Harbour. In connection with tho game against Otago, the latter de-

sires to acknowledge the courtesy of Balmacowon in providing several players as emergencies. St. Kilda had to be content with two wins as against two losses. Anderson’s Bay players generally give their neighbours a good go, but this time they managed to win only one section by a narrow margin. Skips who did well for St. Kilda were Stuart. Dowland, Tamblyn, and Edwards; while for Bay Robertson had a good win. Port Chalmers sent a strong section to town against St. Kilda, and deserved their win, palying a consistently good game. Miller, for Port, had a good win; and Cameron had a big lead for St. Kilda. Roslyn won two sections against St. Clair by the narrowest of margins; as a matter of fact the St. Clair men’s aggregate in the three sections was 171 to Roslyn’s 159. Skips for St. Clair who did well were Jones and Coull; while Todd had the biggest difference in Roslyn’s favour. Caversham started the season well with a 12-point win. In each of the sections (v. Taieri and Valley) on the home green only one rink was up, but with such a margin as to pull the sections through. The two sections on the Valley green were won somewhat easily. Outstanding scares were:— Will 26. Tait 12; Lock 27. Sneeston 8; Foster 35, M'Donald 11; Tonkin 28. Forster 14; and Todd 35, Hopkins 14. Results of last week’s interclub matches:—

The Dunedin Centre Executive, at the request of the Dominion Bowling Association, sent letters to the local parliamentary candidates asking for a reply to the following questions:—(l) Will you support an amendment to the Summer Time Act to provide for the advancement of standard time by one hour during the period of summer time, and vote for the permanent enactment of the measure? (2) In the alternative, will you suport a renewal of the present Summer Time Act for a further term? The following that they were in favour of both questions:—The Hon. W. Downie Stewart, J. W. Munro, W. A. M'Lachlan, C. M. Moss, R. W. Hall, J. Robinson, C. Todd, and W. B. Taverner. Mr 6. S. Thomson replied that he was in favour of question No. 2, and as regards question No. 1 he thought the people should be given an opportunity to vote on this question. Mr C. R. Smith is not signing pledges, but he is in favour of suporting No. 2, and in favour of making it permanent. No replies had been received up to Wednesday from the following:—Sir Chas. Statham. Messrs R. Harrison, A. E. Ansell, N. Campbell, and H. L. Tapley. The Gold Stars rink competition on the Dunedin green this season is creating a keen interest amongst the club members. The conditions of the competition are that own-selection rinks enter, and are drawn for places. The first two rinks drawn play off for the honour of being the first holders of the Stars; the remaining rinks, from 3 to 13, play on a ladder system. Any rink can challenge the one above for its place. The first game was played on Monday evening between W. Briggs, C. Murray, A. Harrawoy, E. Harraway (si and C. Pattillo, S. Nicolson, F. M'Cullough, D. Brown (s) k The game was close and interesting throughout, the scores being level on several occasions. Brown’s rink eventually won by a close margin, and became first holders of the Stars. On Wednesday evening the second game was played between R. ■ Duthie, S. Nicolson, F. M'Cullough, D; Brown (s) and A. A. Smith, E. Rosevear, W. Smith, and J. Bentley (s). Brown’s rink again won, after an interesting game, some good play being shown by both rinks. Several very strong rinks are entered, and many interesting games are expected in the near future. Thus early in the season Caversham’s thistle-holders (Edlin, Melville, Love, Brown) had to meet a challenge from Paine, Lowry, Mathcwson, Stubbs, but by 3 points managed to retain the trophies. Ladies’ intorclub matches commenced yesterday, with these results Dunedin beat Valley, St. Hilda beat Otago, Leith beat Port, Cavorsham beat Bay, Morningtonn bye. The bowling green at Ross Home, North-east Valley, will be officially opened for. the season on Tuesday next, at 2.30 p.m. The proposal to form a ladies’ section in connection with Milton Bowling Club met with a most encouraging reception, and on Tuesday afternoon over twenty Milton Indies attended a nrcliminary meeting in the club’s new pavilion. Mr J. Moroney (president of the men’s club) extended a hearty welcome, and expressed the hope that a club would be formed. It was unanimously agreed to form a club. Mrs A. P. Wethey was appointed president, with Miss J. Farrell a,s secretary. The following were appointed a general committee:— Mcsdames P. A. Thomson, J. N. Edgar, J. A. Stewart, and C. Gregory. It was decided that Tuesday and Friday alternoons should be the (recognised afternoons for play. Six rinks from Bale!utha visited Milton last Saturday for a friendly game, and they had it. The result was in doubt until the delivery of Mr M'Namara’s last bowl, when ho trailed kitty for two, and thus secured victory for Balclutha by that narrow margin (113 to 111). But afterwards it was discovered that, through some mix-up in one of the scoring cards, an additional unnecessary head was played by M'Namara’s rink, in which the visitors scored two points. The actual result on twenty-one heads was a drawn game—lll points each. Milton Club, by the way, has opened brick pavilion, so it seems that the game is looking np in fhat district.
