GOLF
[By Niblick)]
The weather was better for golf during the last week, and as a result all the matches set down were played. A very large field competed for the St. Andrews Cross at Jialmacewen on Saturday, conditions overhead being perfect. The course, however, after the heavy rains, was slow, and the greens were somewhat rough, the bad weather having prevented much being done to them. The scores, with the exception of the first three, were poor as a result, players finding the now bogey hard to beat. Only three players finished up on bogey, a young player, S. Gourley, handing in an excellent card of 4 up with his allowance of 9 strokes. Gourley has not been playing very long, but ho is now playing good golf, and will not remain long on his present handicap. J. Spence followed him closely with a fine card of 3 up from a 4 handicap, this player being very consistent in competitions. The only other player to he np on bogey was 0. Ashcroft (handicap 9), who finished 1 np. There is no match set down at Balmaceen to-morrow.
