TERRITORIAL NOTES

[ By Skirmisher.] Cadet ami Territorial training is now ; iu full swing, and all companies are putting in good work on their respectivo drill nights. Now that the Cadet companies are established _ under the new system a strong section of very promising lads has. been selected to undergo signal training, and it has been found,advantageous to alter their drill night-, from Tuesday to Thursday. The boys are very keen, all being volunteers from the other companies. Cadets are eagerly looking forward to tho third Area. XI. A annual boxing tournament;- which will be held at the Kensington Drill Hall on September 24, 25, and 2(J. Entries are already coining in freely. No doubt the sport has been .stimulated among tho hoys by the many interesting contests which have been held in tho hall this season. Quito a number of entries arc expected from tho 0.8.H.5., where Mr J. I’. Nor they, .physical instructor attached to tho school, is energetically working his boys’ into form. Boxing competitions will also be held at Mosgiel, Green Island, Port Chalmers, and. Oamuru. Tho winners of tho various contests from these centres will be brought to Dunedin, _ and with the winners at tho Dunedin contest finals will bo staged at tho Kensington Drill Hall on the week following the Dunedin competition dates. Thife is an excellent idea, and will no doubt help to increase the interest.

The third New Zealand Infantry Brigade camp is to be held at Waianabarua from March 6 to 11 next year. An excellent site has been chosen for the camii, situated on a large area opposite the Waianakarua railway station on the right-hand side of the railway lino. Owing to its proximity to the river_and the railway, this property is admirably suited for the purpose of the concentrated training of a large number.of troops, and the surrounding country alTords very-suitable areas over . which' to work. The Ist Otago end Ist Canterbury Battalions, Otago University Company of New Zealand Medical Corps, and the Army Service Corps .from Christchurch.' will comprise the infantry selected to go into this camp.- The 16th Pack •‘Battery, N.Z. Artillery from Christchurch will also attend. The l'2th and 14th Batteries are to go into camp at Matarae as usual, and the Otago Mounteds may camp nearer home this year. A refresher, course tor senior officers will be held at Hampden from September 7 to 11. During this course the tactical fitness for promotion examination will be held. A refresher course for all officers of the Otago Regiment will be carried out at Central Battery from the 2oth of this month,to September 1. This course is usuallji held at Oamaru, but it has been 'thought advisable to make i a change this year. As there will be! a largo number of visiting officers in town during the course it has been decided to hold the annual officers’ ball

The ball, will bo held : in tho Savoy. .Tho district riff© meeting has been ( fixed for Labour Day week-end, and ■ will bo held on tho Felichet Bay range. All members of tho N.Z.S.C. and N.Z.P.S. fired their annual Vickers gun course at Pelichet Bay range on Tuesday of last week. The day afforded perfect weather conditions, and some good scores were registered. On Tuesday of last week, a combined mess of the officers of the Otago Mounted Rifles, tho 13th and 14th Baiterys and tho Otago Regiment; was field at the Ypdic Restaurant, the guest of tho evening being ’ ‘ Lieutenantcolonel N. W. B. B. Thomms, D. 5.0., M.C.. N.Z.S.C. At tho conclusion of Iho -mess, an adjournment was made to the Officers’ Club, where Colonel Thomms outlined very fully tho methods of 1 liason between the. various arms in a combined operation, and the extent to which ono arm relied upon . tho others. The lecture was illustrated by an' .example from a previous promotion examination paper and with tho aid of maps, tho candidates for this year’s • promotion examination derived .a good deal of benefit from the evening. IMPERIAL CHALLENGE SHIELDS COMPETITIONS. Competitions- for. 11. M; the King’s Trophy and Imperial Challenge Shields for miniature rifle shooting nave been conducted annually since 1910 by the National Rifle Association, with the object of encouraging every ■ boy of British birth between the years of twelve and nineteen years to learn bow to use the rifle. They were founded by Colonel Raymond W. Fennell, formerly of South Africa; who every year has provided . the- prize lists, ’medals, badges, and = expenses of ammunition and administration Nearly *,‘].!;ooo boys •■.. took part fior -11. Medals of honour are awarded to indiyiejuajs who in'ake scores of outstanding merit in-this match. Out,of a-total possible score of 100 those who scope fGO or 99 points are awarded a medal in silver, and those scoring 98 or 97 a medal bronze. New Zealand scored one,medal in silver and five in bronze, of which the silver and'two bronze medals were won by a Dunedin unit as follows: Medal in silves, Cadet M. M.
