At about 9 a.m. the engine from a suburban train was returning to tho city sheds, while a rake of trucks was being shunted from another lino towards the goods yards. On each engine the display of a green flag on diamond crossing was taken to mean that tho line was clear. The engine hit the leading wagon in tho centre with a tearing, crashing sound, and the wagon and its load toppled over. Tho heavy engine jumped the rails Tho fireman on tho colliding engine jumped off the footplate just as tho smash occurred. The engine and two wagons were damaged, and a long V wagon was hurled off the track and overturned. Tho second truck had the couplings and draw gear damaged. The permanent way was torn up, but the track was not damaged.
