AMERICAN PRESIDENCY
HOOVER HOT VERY POPULAR LIQUOR QUESTION PROMINENT. SAN FRANCISCO, August I. There is much talk in California about the cold reception accorded to Mr H. C. Hoover when the Republican candidate for the Presidency paid his first official visit to San Francisco since his nomination. Bands played, but there was no enthusiasm. For a city which is overwhelmingly. Republican the reception was a complete failure. Partisans sre discussing the question whether Mr' Hoover will be able to carry even his own State of California. . . The truth appears to be that Mr Hoover is not an attractive figure, and cannot catch the imagination of the people The Republicans appear to be faced with a terrific handicap in the personality of their candidate, opposed as he is by a popular idol like Mr A 1 Smith. But it is evident that the “wet” and “dry” issue is going to assume very large proportions. In California at least Mr Smith’s action in plainly stating' his belief in modification of the existing “ dry ” law, in the face of the Democrat Convention’s law-enforcement plank, has secured him in big following among nominal Republicans.
