WORLD’S SHIPBUILDING
A MARKED IMPROVEMENT INCREASE IN MOTOR TONNAGE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 8. (Received January 9, at 11.5 a.m.) Lloyd’s shipbuilding returns for the quarter ending December 31 show a world-wide improvement in the shipbuilding world, the figures being 3,118,721 tons. The figures for Britain and Ireland are double those of December, 1926, namely, 1,579,713 tons now building, of which over 200,000 tons will be registered in the dominions. Germany is building 472,295 tons, while Italy, Holland, France, and Sweden are building over 200,000 tons, but in no country is the tonnage commenced, during the quarter sufficient to replace the tonnage launched. There is a remarkable increase in tanker construction, which represents nearly 24 per cent, of the total of the world tonnage under construction. Ship owners are favoring more and more motor ships, which represent 41 per cent, of the total building. Britain and Ireland have over 62 per cent, of the total abroad.—A. and N.Z, and ‘ Sun ’ Cable.
