GAELIC SOCIETY
There was a crowded attendance at the first meeting of the year of the Gaelic Society, held last evening in Oddfellows’ Hall, Stuart street, in the absence of Chief W. H. M'Lcod, Chieftain Roderick Mackenzie took the chair, and supporting him was Chieftain George Munro. In opening the meeting, the chieftain wished all present a happy and prosperous New Year. A visitor to the gathering was Mr John Smcllie Martin (author and journalist), from Scotland, and, in a brief speech, ho thanked the society for the kindly reception it had offered him, and spoke of the pleasure ho had in being among Highlanders and Scotsmen, _ An excellent programme was submitted. A Gaelic song by Mrs A. M‘Rae (‘Eilean an phraoich’) was the opening item. Mrs M‘Rae also sang ‘ Teanaibhu Dim.’ Other contributors were : —Mrs W. Matheson (‘C’ait an cadail an ribbinn ’ and 1 Far an robh mi an raor ’), Mr George Currie (‘ Scotland Yet,’ ‘ The Sons of Bonnie Scotland,’ ‘The March of the Cameron Men,’ and ‘ Bonnie Prince Charlie ’) ; Mrs J. Mathewson ‘The Land o’Burns and Scott,’ ‘The Lass of Ballochmyle ’), Mr Malcolm Johnston (‘ The Braes of Mar ’ and ‘ A Wee Hoose ’Mang the Heather’), Mr' 11. Waterson (‘The Friens Far Awa,’ ‘The Wee thing That Jagget them a’), Mr Alex. M‘Lennaiv. (Gaelic song, ‘ M’ ribhinn down,’ ‘ Tlieig hi ’gun theig hi leam’). Piper Dan Bruce gave a stirring selection, and Mr J, W. Roger sang ‘Hail, Caledonia’ and ‘A Farewell.’ A vote of thanks to the performers closed the meeting. Mr Alexander M‘Kenzie acted as M.C. for the short dance which followed the musical programme.
