SCHOOL VACATIONS

ST. HILDA'S The annual vacation ceremony of St. Hilda’s Collegiate School took place last evening, Bishop Richards pro sided, and at the close of the, entertainment given by the girls Canon Nevill presented the annual report. The programme was;—School song; carol, ‘ How Far Is It to Hethlohem r : songs, ‘ Waiata Maori ’ ‘and ‘ Up and Away,’ senior singing class; recitations. ‘ Hundreds of, Years Ago ’ and ‘ Wooden Shoos,’ Billie Mitchell and Geraldine Palmer respectively; piano solos, 1 Sonata Pathetiqne ’ (Beethoven), 1 Phantasio ’ (Mozart), ‘Nocturne’ (York Bowen), Audrey Abbey Jones, Mary Pitts, and Phyllis North .•espectively; recitations, ‘ Marengo (Betty Drake) and ‘Her Shoe’ (Naneye Low. ‘Trial Scene from Joan of Arc,’ impressively given by Madge Yates, ended the. entertainment. Dr G. E. Thompson addressed the gathering, and suggested that it was the school break-up that kept the scholars, and especially the teachers, Irom breaking down. (Laughter.) The teachers needed a rest from the scholars voices, and perhaps also the scholars needed a rest from their teachers' voices. The report showed the tremendous range of subjects that a modern school like St Hilda’s had to teach, The Dalton system now introduced into the school was founded on the belief that a scholar learned more from what he did than from wlmt_.be was taught. Every country should import and export at the same time, and any scholar who imported knowledge only and did not export it was a poor scholar. All friends of the school were very sorry to be losing the services of Miss Jones, who had done most valuable work for the school. ... The Navy League prises, were presented first by Airs Edmond, who said that St. Hilda’s School had always bean among the strongest supporters of the league.
