EX-KAISER'S KILT
EARLY BAYS AT BALMORAL. A visit paid by the ex-Kaiser to Balmoral in 1878 is referred to in an instalment of his “early life,” .published in the ‘Spectator.’ After remarking that “the Highlanders, unlike the British, have a great sense of humor,” Wilhelm says that the visit was precious as being the occasion -of an extraordinary proof of Queen Victoria’s attachment to Lim—she granted him permission to wear the Royal dan tartan (Stuart). Dickens was a favorite of the ex-Kaiser as a young man, and Scott maintained a high place in his esteem. He “gobbled” everything that fell into his hands that had to do with history, travel, war, or the sea, particularly the sea. His tutor, it appears, wished him to try his hand at poetry, and he made one attempt. In his sixteenth year he started a tragedy dealing with Harmodios and _ Aristogeiton, the two Athenians who ■ assassinated Hipparchoa in 514 b.c. He took hia task, very seriously, and carpentered his verses complacently and with great diligence. Finally, however, his inspiration waned, and he gave up his plan.
