ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
CHILD FATALLY HURT. A Wellington Association telegram states that Jack Pickles, a child of live and a-half years, was knocked down by ft motor last evening at the Esplanade crossing, Petone, and died in hospital of concussion of the brain and other injuries. It is stated that the child walked behind another car, and the driver could not see him. COLLISION WITH VAN. Stephen Payne, who was badly injured in a collision with a motor van on Thursday died at the Christchurch Hospital on Saturday. Last Thursday he was cycling across the intersection of Linwood avenue and Cashel street when the collision occurred. He was thrown to the ground and sustained severe concussion. On Friday night he underwent an operation, but his condition did not improve. STRUCK BY FALLING TREE. William James Lewis, a resident of Eden terrace, Auckland, while felling a tree with his son, was struck on the neck by a limb when the tree dropped. A fracture of the spine caused almost instant death. The son, Stanley,_ was thrown aga' ist the fence unconscious, and when ho recovered ho found Ins father dead.—Press Association. FALL PROVES FATAL. Victor Mark Hanson, a married man, died in the Balclutha Hospital af 2.30 this morning from head injuries. While attending a card party in a. hall at Balclutha about a fortnight ago Hanson fell, and the injuries to his head necessitated his removal to tho hospital. An inquest will probably be opened this afternoon by tho coroner (Mr H, J. Bison, S.M.).
