ANNIVERSARY DAY
QUESTION OF UNIVERSITY OBSERVANCE At the October meeting of the University Council Mr J. Wallace protested against the fact that the Professorial Board had not been agreeable to the suggestion that Anniversary Day should be a University holiday. The registrar then stated in his report that a deputation _ from the Professorial Board had waited upon the Early Settlers’ Association ' concerning tile observance of Anniversary Day. The association was prepared to accept in the meantime the board’s suggestion for the reading to the students of a memorial setting forth the story of the foundation of the province. The matter came up again at yesterday’s meeting, when Mr . Wallace moved the following resolution in accordance with his notice of motion That the Professorial Board be requested to take into its favorable consideration the observance of Anniversary Day as a University holiday.” The Mover said the Early Settlers’ Association had agreed to the proposal put forward by the Professorial Board ns it thought it would be better than nothing at all. Ho hoped the Professorial Board would reconsider its decision. “It’s largely a matter of sentiment,” he said, “ but, after all, most of us here are the descendants or early settlers.” It was very pleasing to know that Anniversary Day had come back to its own. It had been stated that if Anniversary Day was kept as a holiday it would interfere with the work of the University, but ho noticed that Labor Day was kept, and there was a holiday on Capping Day. Mr Scurr seconded. The Chancellor (.Mr T._ K. Sidoy, M.P.) said he was largely in agreement with the remarks made by Mr Wallace. The council, however, had agreed to the Professorial Board’s recommendation, and,he thought it would be better to let matters stand for next year. The Professorial Board would meet in March, when it could be considered again. Mr Wallace said he was quite agreeable to allow the decision to stand for next year. Sir Lindo Ferguson asked whether it was proposed to extend the Univarsity year by a day, or did Mr Wallace went to take a day off the all too brief period ? Mr Wallace: All I’ve got to say about that remark is that it is a jiicce of special pleading. Mr Colin Gilray said that John M'Glashan College was opened last year on Anniversary Day, but that was the first time since 1923. Mr W. J. Morrell stated that the Boys’ High School closed on Anniversary Day. Dr Fitzgerald: If the matter were placed before the students it would be carried unanimously. Mr Wallace’s motion was carried.
