“MISS NEW ZEALAND”

WHO WILL SHE BE? EACH PROVINCE CONFIDENT Interest in the Miss New Zealand beauty competition is just now reaching fever heat. News from Auckland indicates that tho excitement in the northern city is intense. _ The selection of Miss Auckland is still under way in tho theatre there. ‘‘Again last night,” says the latest Auckland ‘Star’ to hand, “a special posse of police had difficulty in controlling the enthusiastic crowd when the girls arrived at the theatre, and as they left their Pontiac and Buick cars and passed down through the file of admirers they were given a wonderful greeting. Inside the _ theatre the enthusiasm swelled to a climax. When the curtain was drawn aside to show “ Miss Canterbury ” (Miss Mavis Pycroft) standing on the dais, the audience made a demonstration that increased in its Volume as each girl appeared. After all had been > seen in evening frocks, tho ten beauties made their second bow, in bathing suits. Their reappearance was the signal for further excitement and enthusiasm, the cheering and clapping lasting long after the curtain had dropped. Outside the theatre the crowd had swelled. When the girls left in their cars enthusiasm had reached a high pitch, and as the beauties drove through the mass of admirers the demonstration was eclipsed only by tho reception on their first day in Auckland.” The southern beauties are having tho time of their lives, and are enjoying every minute of their stay in Auckland. All sorts of invitations are being extended to the visitors and to tho local four, and as many as possible are being accepted. The _ public h?J had to he called on to realise that th< girls’ time is very fully occupied, ana that they cannot he expected to ba “on parade ” unceasingly. They hava attended many cabaret evenings and garden parties. The Wellington candidates, Miss M’Cubhin and Miss Wilson, have created a very favorable impression. A Wellington newspaper blandly states that it is now fairly generally conceded that Miss Wellington is fairly certain to secure one of the two first places in the final selection of Miss New Zealand and her maide of honor; but Dunedin people (and we have the right to be fairly hopeful at the least) will note that it is stated in tho same paper that “Miss Otago” is regarded in some quarters as being a fairly formidable rival.” . Every province seems to be confident of its ability to carry away tho honors, as may be judged from tbis paragraph from Christchurch; —“ Miss Wellington, a beautiful girl, is regarded as Miss Pvcroft’s most formidable rival, but, while Miss Wellington has certainly a beautiful face, she lacks tho grace that is the most conspicuous feature of little Miss Canterbury. She hasn’t tho form of the little southerner, and she is well over average height. Miss Canterbury should heather. But it is all mere speculation. The final decision is entirely in the hands of the judges, and Otago people need not bo dismayed.
