SECOND CRICKET TEST
A MAGNIFICENT TRIUMPH, Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, Australian and N.Z. Press A**ociaM >n. SYDNEY, January 5. (Received January 5, at 10.45 a.m.) The ‘ Sydney Morning Herald,’ in commenting on the cricket match, says: “Anticipations were entirely exceeded and not a little confused by the result of the day’s play. It was a magnificent triumph for English cricket, not only in resuscitating its prestige, but. also in giving it a chance of success ,in this match where previously none seemed to exist. For two batsmen to defy the bowling and stay in all day is a new record gained by Hobbs and Sutcliffe, as it is also a record to make three opening partnerships running into three figures in test cricket in succession. Hobbs has now almost completed his century of three-figure’ partnerships for the first wicket in.big cricket.” [The record first-wicket partnership for test matches is 525 by Hobbs and Rhodes at Melbourne in the 1911-12 .season.J
