The gatekeeper had closed the gate on the opposite side of the line to which Mr Herfnrd was approaching, and ho was unable to pull up in time, or he did not see the train approaching. He passed through the open gate and stopped directly in front of the train, which was travelling at the rate of forty-five miles per hour. Death was instantaneous. The car was caught under the engine, and it caused the engine and six carriages to leave the rails. Apparently none of the train crew or passengers were injured.
