FIRST ROSLYN GIRL GUIDES
BREAK-UP CEREAIONY. The first annual break-up of tho First Roslyn Company of Girl Guides was held on Saturdav evening in the Salvation Army Hall, Tlighgatm Airs J. Smart presided. Tho Hon". Downie Stewart, Aliss Stewart, Aliss Reynolds (Divisional Commissioner), and Miss Carpenter (provincial secretary) occupied scats on the platform. The hall was well filled with parents and friends. The report read by Captain Taylor disclosed a healthy stale of affairs. Fortysix Guides and seven Brownies are on tho roll. Thirty-nine Guidos had obtained their tenderfoot badges, and seven their second class. The financial position was very satisfactory. The sum of £92 had been expended in providing the girls with uniforms, hats, etc. A cash balance of £l2 was in hand. The committee had worked hard during tho year, and it was through its efforts that such a splendid financial position had been obtained. The captain had been relieved of ail financial worry, thus being in tin: position of being able to give all her time to the, training of the girls. The remarks of the Hon. Downio Stewart were specially addressed to tho girls. Ho spoke of how tho 'guide choruses brought back to his mind incidents of the days of war. Alen, when marching in France, would complain of tiredness, but would carry on as long as possible, and it was this spirit of endurance and their loyalty to Britain that carried them through. Ho knew of the excellenl work Vicing done by the Girl Guides, and he wished them every success. The Divisional Commissioner presented to Lender AL Dawson the Glendiniug Cup for gaining the highest number of marks for neatness of uniform during tho year. Aliss D. Stewart handed second-class badges to Leaders Burns, Paul, Hall, Dawson, and Sgpond Holloway. Air A. il. Chadwick presented to Leaders Pan! and Hall Aliss Stewart’s (late, ambulance instructor) prizes for ambulance work. Tho camp essay prize was won by Leader Hall, and handed over by Mr 11. R. Ives. Captain Taylor presented to Alias Downie Stewart a Girl Guide badge. The following contributed to the musical programme:—Piano solos, Aliss J. Cubitt and Guide K. Butler ; piano duet, Guides B. Cornish and E. Joyce; choruses and campfire scona by the company ; recitations, Second W. Hunter and Guide K. Cornish; “ pow-wow ” by tho Brownies. Dr Aloore, on behalf of the committee, proposed a vote of appreciation to tho company officers, Captain Taylor and Lieutenant Jeffrey, for the excellent manner in which they bad carried out their duties during the‘year. In honor of the Hon. Downie Stewart the, girls performed the guide haka. Afiss J. Cubitt made an efficient accompanist during the evening. Supper was provided, after which the singing of tho National Anthem brought an enjoyable function to a close.
