Mr G. E. Mannering, until recently manager of tho Christchurch branch of tho Union Bank of Australia, has joined Ihe board of directors of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company. New visitors at the Excelsior Hotel ara Mr G. Little, Mr F. N. Hart, Mr G. B. Saunders, and Mr F. W. Marshall (Wellington), Mr A. Hart (Lawrence), and Mr D. M'Killip (Naseby). At a meeting of the Dunedin Painters'' Society, held last Monday evening, Mr H. Beeson, who recently relinquished the office or treasurer, which position he had fulfilled for tho past seventeen years, was presented by his fellow-members with a silver memento in recognition of his services. Mr W. Wilson (president), in making the presentation, referred to Mr Beeson’s zealous and faithful services to the

society. ■Those staying at the Grand Hotel are Mr J. P, Macneill (Melbourne), Mr E. R. Lough and Mr R, R. Grange (Wellington), Mr R, Garrett, Mr H. E. Cretscfamet (Auckland), and Mr H. Angel! (Christchurch). At tho Dunedin Orphans’ Club’s gathering last night a vote of sympathy with tho relatives of the late Mr R, S. Wardrop was passed, members standing in silence. The deceased was a vice-president of the club.

Tho Rev. Bower Black, of Carterton, who received a call to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, is a Hew Zealander, who, after taking his LL.B. degree at Auckland University, was admitted to the Bar, Later he entered Knox College, Dunedin, where he received his theologic degree. On completing his license ho was for four years minister at Dargavillo. For the last three years he has been in charge of the Carterton parish.—Our Christchurch correspondent. Tho death occurred here yesterday of Mr Hugh Macncil Doig after a comparatively short, but severe, illness. Mr Doig, who was in his forty-fifth year, was an inspector in the service of the Agricultural Department, and was well known throughout Otago and .Southland, In his younger days he was a keen athlete, and, as well as hia brother, Mr J. A. Doig, ho ixrpre-' sented Southland on the cricket field.

At a meeting of the Philharmonic Society held last evening a resolution was passed conveying the sympathy of tho members to Mys Wardrop and family in the death of the late Mr 11. S. Wardrop. Our Parliamentary reporter wires that an important series of public works appointments are announced. Mr A. Divine, ■ engineer in charge at Mangahao, will become district engineer at Arapuni, supervising the contract on behalf of tho Government.. Mr J. A. Baker, district engineer at Auckland, has been appointed extra inspecting engineer attached to tlu Welling head office. He is to be succeeded in Auckland by Mr L. B. Campbell. district engineer at Dunedin. The vacancy at Dunedin is to be filled by Mr J. 11. Marks, resident engineer at Alexandra. The latter position will be ultimately filled by an engineer who will be released through the completion of the Mangahao scheme. The position of district engineer at Greymouth. vacant through the retirement of Mr Gillies, is to bo filled by Mr Harold Watkinson, who was in charge of the Olira district. The engineer at Gisborne will .be Mr George Albertson, resident engineer in charge of tho North Auckland Railway construction. Tho latter vacancy mil bo Idled by Mr R. H Packwood, now engineer at Wairoa. At to-day’s confereiico of the National Council of Women the president (Mrs Carmalt Jones) paid a tribute to the work of Miss. Jean Begg, and it was decided to write to the Minister of Education urging him to retain tho services of Miss Begg in New Zealand. Mr Lyndon Bastings, who was for some time science master at the King Edward Technical College, Dunedin, has been in residence in Cambridge for the past year, pursuing a course of research in radioactivity under Sir Ernest Rutherford. As a result of his year’s work, Mr Bastings has been awarded a grant by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and this will enable hhn to remain at Cambridge for another year.
