MAN'S DEATH IN PRIVATE HOSPITAL. Thomas Collins, thiriy-six, a bootmaker, living in Mtialancl street with his wife and family, died in a private hospital at 11.30 a.m on Monday, following an operation for toxic goitre An inquest was opened before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., as coroner, in the evening, and, evidence of identification having been given by Henry Albert Sandon, the inquiry was adjourned sino dio. Dr Gerald Fitzgerald operated, and Dr Cecil Do Latour administered the anaesthetic—ethor. The matron of tho hospital was also present. Dr Fitzgerald states that the deceased was admitted to the hospital on August 15 suffering from toxic goitre. At the end of fifteen days in bed his condition had improved so much that it was possible to perform the operation, and a start was made at about 10 a.m. Deceased took the anaesthetic well, and the operation was finished in an hour and a-half. The dressings were being applied when the deceased suddenly collapsed. He had had no anesthetic for ten minutes. Artificial respiration, cardiac massage, stimulants, and intra venous salines were applied, and continued for half an hour without result. Death, in the opinion of Dr Fitzgerald, as given in his statement, was duo to heart failure.
