SINGULAR SURNAMES
Many surnames aro frequently mispronounced. Cockburn should be Ko-burn, not Cockburn.; Coko should be pronounced Cook; Hervey, as if written Harvey; Layard, as Laird; Falconer, as Fawkncr; Gough should bo pronounced Goff; Gcqfrey, as if written Jeffrey; Compton, as if Kumpton; Euthven, as Riven. .Lyvcden is pronounced as Livden, and Pepys as repis, with the accent on the first syllable. Brougham, whether referring to tho illustrious statesman or tho vehicle named after him, should not be pronounced as two syllables—Brawham or Brooham—but ns. one—-Broom. Colquhoun, Duchesne, Marjoribanks, and Cholmondeley—four formidable names to the uninitiated-must bo called Cohoon, pukarn, Marehbauks, and Chumlcy. Oholmeley is also pronounced Chumiey. Mainwanng and M'Lood must be pronounced Mannering and Macloud. The final x in Molyneanx and Vanx is sounded, but the final x in Devereaux and Des Vaux is mute. In Ker the o becomes short a, and the word is Kar; it would be awfully bad form to pronounce it Cur! In Waldegrave the de is dropped, and it becomes Wa!grave, with tho accent on the first syllable. Sandys should be spoken as ono syllable—Sands; fit. Clair is also one word—Sinclair; and fit. Ledger is called Sellenger, Tyrwhit is called Tirritt; and Tollemache is pronounced Tollmash, with no accent on either syllable. Betlume should be spoken as Beeton, and Milnes as Mills. Charteris is pronounced Charters, and Glarais is called Glams. Geoghegan is always spoken as Gagan. Beauclcrk or Beauclark is pronounced as Beauclare, with an accent on the first syllable; and Beauvoir as Beevor. Wemyess is pronounced as Weems, and Willoughy d’Eresby as Willowby d’Ersby. St. John must be pronounced Sinjin as a_ surname or Christian name; when applied to a locality,or building, it is pronounced as spelt, _ St. John; Montgomery, or Montgomerie, is pronounced Mungomery, with the accent on the second syllable. Btraclmn should be pronounced Strawn.
