LADY DUFF-GORDON.
BANKRUPTCY DISCHARGE
Ln.dy (Lucy Christian) Dntf-Gordon, the famous dress designer, was granted her discharge from bankruptcy in London recently subject to payment of a judgment for £250, by Mr Registrar Hope. The Official Receiver, who alleged that Lady Duff-Gordon had contributed' to her failure bv unjustifiable extravagance, said that the proofs Of debt and probable claims amounted to £41,880. Lady Duff-Gordon had estimated her assets to realise £2.695, but onlv £396 had so far been received, and it 'was doubtful whether Hie assets would prodiice_ enough to discharge the preferential claims. Lady Duff-Gordon, he continued 1 , began business as a dress designer in 1893, and ten years later sold the business to Lucile, Ltd., of which she acted as a director, and to which she became dress designer. She also became dress designer to Paris and Now York companies. She attributed her insolvency to her employment having been terminated, to the consequent stoppage of her income from the Paris company, and also to an aotion brought against her by another person. She said that in May, 1919, her salary, foes, and dividends from four of (ho companies brought her £IO,OOO a sear, but she did not'know until shortly before her failure what the position was between herself and the companies. Mr Goldman, forMho trustee, said that Lady Duff-Gordon had behaved in an exemplary manner. She had assisted him in the recovery of assets outside tho jurisdiction of the court. I It was further stated that the actual proofs of debt amounted only to £3)263.
