"D —N THE RATEPAYERS!”
A SOCIALIST SENTIMENT,
Tho public memory is short, and this exclamation, which came from tho lipsof one of the Socialist councillors of Christchurch (tho Rev, J. K. Archer), may_ have been forgotten by many. Tho sentiment was expressed during a discussion on tho dismissal of some of tho City Council employees last year, and is bo typical of the policy of Socialists when it is_ a question of their interests and tho public weal, that it is as well to remember it at this stage. No better example of this is needed than tho disastrous results that followed the extreme Labor regime in Sydney. Numbers of cases of “ graft," waste, wild and stubborn methods were exposed from time to time, and finally “ Lambertism ” was overthrown, but not before it had piled up a legacy that Sydney is still endeavoring to get rid of. One little bill of £46,0C0 odd was run up for overtime, as the result of the cutting down of the working week to five days. In endorsing a ticket of twelve candidates, the Dunedin Citizens’ League has no desire to dictate to the electors as to whom they should vote for, but merely to advise those who favor sound, sane progress as opnosed to possible launching of impracticable schemes and the consequent costly purchase of experience, to vote for the candidates they name. These candidates are Ors Bogpr, Wilson, Taverner, Scott, Sincock, Shaddock, and Hancock, and Messrs Douglas, Mitchell, Halliday, Ritchie, and Clark. The league wishes to emphasise the importance of voting solidly for the ticket, so as to avoid vole-splitting complications. [Published by arrangement with the Dunedin Citizens’ Leagued
