ASSAULT-AT-ARMS

DISPLAY AT Y.M.C.A. Last evening tho annual display of physical work by the Y.M.C.A. classes took place in the institution's gymnasium, Moray place, in the presence of a largo gathering, and under the direction of Mr J. V. Hanna. Tho display was most varied, including exhibitions "by classes of girls, boys, and young men. The girls and young ladic-s provided a clever exhibition of marching, club swinging, etc. ; a squad of young boys showed well in rope climbing, and tho leaders’ corps on tho rings provided an interesting item. Gymnastic work of a high order by the men’s classes on the parallel bars, the horizontal bar, and the horse showed the excellence of the training provided at the Y.M.C.A. There were also events of singlesticks and boxing, and a splendid tumbling exhibition by Messrs R. Gaidar and IV. Kecsing. A Maori haka in realistic costume proved a most popular item, as did a hornpipe charmingly danced by Miss V. Patterson. A piccolo solo was contributed by Mr Barton, and Miss Ritchie and Mr G. Sly apted as accompanists. Altogether tho entertainment was capital, and demonstrated beyond question the excellence of the teaching on the physical side of the association’s work. The spotlight effects, managed by Mr W. Simpson, were very fine. The same entertainment will be given to-night.
