ROAD IMPROVEMENT WORKS.

TO TM BDITOB. Sir,—J, iu common with many others, am perplexed aa t» tho mtoivo of tho City Council in spending so much time and money in regrading Haywnxd street, Montecillo. If it is to find work for unemployed workers, to my mind there arc plenty of more urgent works to be undertaken of far greater value to tho city and of a greater reproductive character. It the laud of property-owners had been acquired between the bottom of Patrick street, Mpntecillo, and Hayward street, and a through road taken down to the fllon, which I hftvc no doubt in© city onginccr could have planned and executed, if onlv for foot traffic, it would have been a thousand times of greater value and utiliiv than the botch that is being perpetrated in Havward street at the present time, . , I understand the mad is to he filled in to a considerable height. If so, it means that the cottages on the lower side of Hayward street will he confronted with a very high bank, which will have to be made secure and entrances provided for three people. Now, who is going to benefit, by these works? As faros I can ace, iu common with other residents, it appears to he a work which is mainly going to benefit one property-owner. I would like this question answered; How much assistance has been rendered in money and kind hv adjoining property-owners, and how much, of tho ratepayers money is going to bo squandered on this totally unnecessary work? As one ratepayer remarked to”me. it is a scandalous waste of tho ratepayers’ money. Tho public should have an answer to these emeries at once, i'lid if any of the ratepayer’money io being wasted Imre it should be stopped at once. Why not find useful work for the tmemnlovo.d. and have our money spent wisely and well? I would like, sir, to see a representative of the ‘Star’ inspect tide work and make a report, and I am quite sure he would fully endorse nil I have Gaid, Our rates wo very high now. Lot them be spent wisely and well is the earnest wif-h of Egmntox. October 11.
