OTAQO CENTRAL VETERAN. [From Otra Own Co-respondent.] - , r ■ CROMWELL, November 22. Mr Charles Holden, aged 79 years a very old" and well-known resident of this district, passed away vesterdav morning He came to the.Dominion 54"vears aco and has resided in the Central ever since After following various occupations, he took the position of town clerk to the Borough of Cromwell, which he occupied with great credit for 14 years, He also occupied many other public positions with success, until failing health put him aside He was an extremely popular figure, a KntaalSS 4 '-' and a " ardent cham P ion of ~?}Z J^ H 1 5- Scu roder. an .old resident of the West Coast, has died at Auckland at the advanced age of 93 years. The death is reported of Captain F \ HuteMngra, for 20 years a well-known resident of Lytteltoii. who came to New Zealand 30 years ago and joined the' Blackball Coal Company. After serving that company afloat for some time he went ashore as the company's marine superintendent at Lyttelton, a position he occupied until ill-health compelled him to resign .about a year ago. He was a member of the National Disputes Committee. Advice has been received from London m the death of Captain J. W. Batchelor, laie of the Liverpool Salvage Association Captam > Batchelor, who visited Lyttelton some nine months ago, was one of the senior members of the technical staff of the above association, and retired early ,last year after 30 years' service. The deceased was responsible for many important salvage contracts on behalf of the Royal Navy, the mercantile marine, and foreign Governments during the war. He was a member of the council of the Mercantile Marine Service Association for 28 years, and a member of the " Conway " Committee and the committee of the Homes for Aged Mariners and Gibson Widows' Homes. It is 'understood- that Captain Batchelor was preparing to return to his home in New Zealand when his death occurred.
