The secretary of the Otago Education Board forwarded the following letter j—- " The board have received from Miss A. M. Orr, of Taihape, a letter asking the board's permission for the circulation among the Otago schools of leaflets regarding the formation of a children's league in connection with the Wellington branch of the S.P.C.A. Before giving a definite answer to this application the board are desirous of knowing whether the circulation of leaf- | lets referred to in the OtHgo district would be deemed by vour committee as an infringement of the "functions of the Otago I society."—A copy of the circular was also enclosed.—The chairman said the Otago Society already had a children's lenjrne in connection with them, but more might be done in that direction. Tt was not i desirable, however, that branches should 1 overlap in their work, a? would be the j case if the Education Board acted in a-c----j cordance with the Wellington proposal.— jit was resolved to reply stating that.'as • the society already had a" children's league, they did not wish the scholars in Otago school to join with the Wellington Society. —lt was also decided that the secretary investigate the position in regard to the society s children league, and bring it before the next meeting. The Canterbury S.P.C.A. wrote stating that at a recent-trotting meeting at Christ" .church their- inspector hc;d occasion to warn the driver of a horse competing in one of the harness events for using the "eart witch." They were now in communication with the trotting clubs in the district with a view to having the -use of the instrument prohibited. They were also asking the clubs to assist in bringing about the more humane use of the overhead ." checkrein " on the trotting course by instructing drivers to looseli the rein immediately the race is over. Most of the local drivers were aheadv doing that. —lt was decided to write to tiottino- clubs asking that, if the "eartwitch" be used, steps bo taken to prevent it.
