Captain L. Macintosh Ellis, newly-ap-pointed Director of Forestry for New Zealand, and Mr Turner, secretary of the department, are at present in the south engaged in the preliminary work of inspecting the various forest reserves and getting into touch with the people most closeiv interested.
Mr J. Caughley (Assistant Director of Education! lias left New Zealand on a visit to the United States.
Mr John Ramsay, who lias been engineer to the Clutha County Council for the past 10 years, has resigned. Tho Rev. Dr Cameron (Chancellor of the University), who has been amending a meeting of" the University Senate in Wellington, returned yesterday afternoon. Mr W. A. Flavell, general manager of the Westport Coal Company, returned by the first express yesterday from a visit to Wcstpcrt.
Mr James M'Leau, assistant aeneral manager of the National Bank of 'New Zealand, has left for London on 12 months' leave of absence. Sir Joseph Ward will leave Christchurch on Saturday to join the Tofua for Ran PVancisco. He expects to leave NewYork about June 19 on the s.s. Imperator for England. Lady Ward will accompany Sir Joseph, who expects to be away from New Zealand for 10 or 12 months. The will of the late Alderman Sir Richard Watkins Richards, civil engineer, late Lord Mavor of Svdney, has for probate purposes been sworn at £2.594. The estate was left absolutely for the benefit of the widow. Mr H. T. Thodey, accountant of the Auckland branch of the Bank of Australasia, has been appointed manager of the Tnvercargill branch. Mr A. 8. Browne has been transferred from Invercargill to Wanganui: Mr W. L. Ward from Wanganui to Wellington, vice Mr A. W. Butt, who is retiring on pension; and Mr A. H. H.Myles from Bathnrst (N.S.W.) to Dunedin. Mr Jack Stolir, the Taranaki and New Zealand representative footballer, is to leavo New Zealand in the course of a few days for South Africa, where he intends to settle. Two well-known raee-horse owners, and breeders—Mr T. H. Lowrv. of Hawke's Bay, and Mr J. B. Reid,'cf Elderslie—were passengera by the Niagara for Vancouver last. week. ' General Sir Arthur Currie. who was Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Army in France, has accepted the principalship of M'Gill University, states an Ottawa cable. At the monthly meeting of the Education Board to-dav Mr William L. Walton, of the Gore High School, wa* appointed third assistant at tho Normal Model School. A P.A. message from Marton states that William John Barch, the first white settler in the Moawhango district, di-ed this morning, alter a long illness, aged 78. He acted as brigade-major under Colonel M'Donnel in the To Kooti troubles. He was founder of the Farmers' Union, in which lie took a keen interest from its inception,
