FACTS AND TRIFLES. We think that the Otago Chess Club are making" a move in the right direction in conducting an Otago open chess championship tournament on June 5 and the three following evenings. There is to he both a senior a nd a junior championship, and if the expected support is forthcoming the titles will be competed for annually. There are plenty of first-class Dunedin players outside the O.C.C. membership who are likely to compete, and if J. Dunlop, Bev. Ponder, B. A. Le Petit, and others of similar calibre from Oamaru and Invercargill take part the play should be of a high standard. Messrs SS. Myers, L. D. Coombs, W. G. Stenhouae, H. H. Henderson (President 0.C.C.) and D. H. Hastings (secretary 0.0.0.) are the committee who have been entrusted with the'management of the tournament, and intending, competitors should communicate with them without delay. It ia said that Steinilz’s most brilliant moves were those that he did not make. He could be brilliant enough when that course waa profitable, but generally he saw the flaw in such experiments and avoided, accordingly. Before he developed his ‘"modem theory ” the speculative method was much favored by the leading players, but Morphy waa the only one who succeeded in attaining certainty of result. The old styla was imaginative and chivalrous, and therefore very attractive. If it could still be relied on a good deal of the dull play that generally to some extent mars modem competitions would be avoided. But 'Marshall's failures confirm the impression that the old style of strategy is not to be revived m hs original form, though some accomplished masters, such as Schlechtex, Maroczy, Janowski, and occasionally Lasker, ore showing that there are possibilities of combining the brilliance of the past with the soundness or the present. Tlvoy have followed the lend of Morphy, and perhaps It is in this direction that chess will develop.
