ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
SURFING FATALITY; RETURNED SOLDIER,
A fatality occurred at Lyall Bay yesterday when a returned soldier. Thomas Alexander Mainro, single, aged 36, apparently died from heart failure when swimming -in the surf. His mother, who was sitting on the beach, noticed the body floating face downwards and immediately raised the alarm. Help wa-a promptly forthcoming but life was extinct. Munro arrived back from England last month, and had been in indifferent health since.— Wellington telegram. A P.A. message from Wellington states that at the inquest on Thomas Alexander Munro Dr Hattie stated' that lie liardly Miought that the deceased bad been drowned, but that he had lost his breath while swimming. Another witness said that had deceased been in his usual health he would have 'been able to walk ashore had he got into danger. The Coroner returned a verdict that Munro died from heart failure while bathing. The evidence went to show that it was not an ordinary case of drowning.
Charles Dunce, eight years of age, was ran over by a tramcar at Lyall Bay (Wellington) yesterday. Ona leg was so badly smashed that it had to be amputated. The latest report stated that the lad was doing satisfactorily. An inquest was held at Christchureh on Thursday on the body of Francis dement May, aged 38, a returned soldier, who was admitted to the hospital to undergo an operation, and who died in the operating room while under an anaesthetic. Medical evidence was given, after which the coroner returned a vordict that deceased died ot heart failure while under the influence of an ancesthetic.
