THE ORMROD QUESTION
At last night’s meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council
Or Edgar moved—“ That the resolution in the minutes of the meeting held on Monday, August 12, to the effect that If. Ormrod be instructed to join the Laborers’ Union by Saturday, August 17, 1918. otherwise his services will bo dispensed until, ' be rescinded, and that tho council take legal advi co on tho matter.” Cr Edgar spoke briefly on tho matter, and read a letter from a solicitor in regard to the question. He then asked the Mayor several questions regarding his (the Mayor's) legal position in connection with the whole question This led to strong protest from several councillors, and Cr Edgar ivrs asked to confine himself entirely to his resolution.
The Mayor at this juncture said that, his bona tides in the matter had been doubted, and he had been placed in a very awkward position. Ho then vacated the chair, and asked the Deputy Mayor (Cr Edgar) to lake charge, until the question was settled. Cr Allen strongly protested against Cr Edgar taking the ■chair to veto on liu own motion, and tho. Jhci Mavor declined to exercise Ins vote on the ground that his bona fides had been challenged. This means that Ormrod will remain in the coimcilb employ iu the meantime, a.ud the matter will be further considered at the next meeting of the council.
