The enemy are showing extreme desperation, and stronger forces have been brought uj» seeking to prevent our progress to ta& eastern edge oi the plateau. We are overcoming resistance at various points. COPENHAGEN, Angust 28. German and Austrian correspondent* state that the Isonzo battle is the greatest battle ever seen. The Italian armv is twice as great as in anv previous fight on the Italian front. The Italians are tenfold more numerous than the Austriana in some places, and they also have 1,000 batteries; The fact that the Italians directed their artillery on Monte Santo from two sides compelled the withdrawal of the Austrians on a front of sis kilometres. Monte Sau Gabriell is now the only barrier protecting the Austrian positions north oi the Goruia-Isonzo Pass. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, August 23. Writing' in the ' Daily Chronicle,' Mr Perrival Gibbon states "that the Italian attackers are utilising captured food, rendering the victualling problem easy. Something like battle movement and manoeuvres has replaced the trench warfare on the northern positions of the batfclef round. The Italians are filled with the ighest hopes. AUSTRIAN APPREHENSION. BORDERING ON PANIC. Reuter's Telegrams. ROME, August 27. The Austrian military authorities have ordered the evacuation of Trieste. A great many civilians have already left. All valuables have been removed. NEW YORK,'August 28. The ' New York Times's' Paris correspondent says that advices from Switzerland state that Austria is bordering on a panic. The "Vienna newspapers are barely venturing to discuss the military situation. . There are serious internal troubles in Bohemia and Transylvania, and the failure of the peace manoeuvre i 3 a terrible blow. Berne is becoming a centre of Austrian intrigue, much, of which is pro-Ally.
