Sir Douglas Haig reports: We captured the enemy's position on a fiont of over a mile eastward of Hargicourt (between La Catelet and P'eroiuie' four miles south-west of the former town), and we penetrated half a mile, carrying strong points at Cologne Farm and Talakof. This morning the enemy attacked, using flammemverfer" on the Ypres-Meuin roau, and momentarily reoccupied the north-west corner of Inverness copse, but a counterattack restored the positions. We have slightly advanced of St. Julien, but the enemy recaptured a post south-west of Lombaertzilye. We brought down seven enemy aeroplanes. FRENCH SUCCESS EAST OF THE METJSE. Australian and N.Z. A French communique states: On the right bank of the Meuse we successfully attacked between Marmont Farm and Bois le Chaume,,aud captured all our objectives on a four-kilometre front to a. depth of a kilometre. The whole of Bois des luwses and Bois de Beaumont is in our hands. We have reached the southern outskirts of the Vilkige of Beaumont. Our artillery caught and dispersed with heavy losses a violent, counter-attack debouching on Bois de la Wavrille. [Beaumont, seven miles north of Verdun, is four miles east of the Meuse, opposite Forges.] Admiralty per Wireless Press. e t LONDON, August 26. A German official message says: The French gained initial successes near Beaumont, but we subsequently drove them back.
