It was most unfortunate that the- Mardi Grits at St. flair had a set-back by tin 1 rain which fell on Saturday afternoon just at thu time the stallholders wcie preparing for brisk Imsincw. Tbeie na» a b'.g crowd pieseut, which was Miniated to be from ~>.5U0 to 4,000, and but for the rain the fair would have proved a success beyond tbo most sanguine expectations of its promoters. However, that is not, to say that the fair proved to be a failure by any mean;,,- it was quite remarkable lionmany people remained, after the rain reused. 'I he result at. night was most gratifying, a.s the crowd proved sufficient to practically clear out ill I the stalls. There was a string of special trams from the old Post Office from noon onwards, and every car was piked to its utmost capacity. Only a very short lime, however, could be spent at the beach before the rain started. Hundreds of people, old and young, airived at the St. Clair terminus just as the. rain was falling very heavily, and tliey returned homewards a"s quickly a.s possible. The special car.-, were not taken off the run, being required to carry the people back to town. 'Thousands of people ni'-hed for shelter in tiie tents and stalls-, tea rooms, verandahs, and every covered-in place in the vicinity of the beach and cur line. Hundreds of people remained until the weather improved, and when the rain ceased, and it was deuded to con tin ns the activities of the fete, there was ~t,i)l a large ciowd presenr.
Considerable interest wa.s manifested in the children's sports, which were inteirnptrd by the rain, and which were resumed again about 4 p.m. The events on the programme provided races for children of all ago>, three-legged races. skipping etc. Tiler*; was also a returned soldiets' race. A football tournament took place between a number of teams from the public schools, the players being in sacks. The first match resulted in a draw between the teams from Macandrew Road and Forbury Xo. 1. Then Maori Hill wa» beaten by Forbury Xo. 2. Macandrew Bond and Forbury' X'o. 2 then met in the final, which resuiled in a draw, and the teams divided the piize. The event proved so entertaining, and produced such a keen contest that we hope it will figure on future, programmer. There were three jiri7.es for --and modelling. The n'r°t plac went to X'oel Kingston (St. C'iait), with Aubrey Hay second, and Marjoriu Kingston and P p ggy Priest (equal) thud.
