THE FIRST DIVISION

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir. —Your correspondent. G. Robinson, could not have read my letter aright, or ho would have swu that it wos written for the. protection of the Second Division, and advocated that they till the places of First Division men in essential service. Women could do the selling of hoots and shoes. In your correspondent's own line exemptions are being " grant-ed at overy meeting of the Appeal Hoard, so whv not. fill their places? There were. 84.000' men in the Fir.* Division, and one would have ■expected at least 15 month*.'reinforcements out of this number, lint the .Minister of Defence expects the call of the .Second Division to come in August. Thus there is practically only seven months' Mipplv out of 84,000 men. We will find that in July and August the exemptions will be few. as the toll will be hoa.vv in France this coming summer, and every fit man will be sent- to the firing line. Therefore exemptions should be granted to the Firat Division men. As for drawing notice to any particular shop. I can assure your correspondent that I do not. know the name of the firm, and would have to ba inside, and see. the man that was serving the customers before I could give it.— I am, etc.. Compulsion. February 19.
