ENCOUNTER OFF BRAZIL.
BRITISH CRUISERS’ ROUNDUP. THREE CHASED: ONE SUNK, ONE BEACHED, NEW AORK. February 16. Unofficial reports from Brazil state tliat a British cruiser chared three raiders and sank one of them. An American cruiser has received a report ot the battle In-, wireless from another cruiser (British) which single-handed fought the raiders. .The cruiser sighted three raiders. February 16. (Received February 17. at 9.55 a.m.i The earlier reports of the naval engagement off Brazil are supported by a message from Rio do Janeiro, stating that the newspaper ‘ll ini ’ says that an officer of a British cruiser confirms tho reports of a battle off Fcrrumdo Nornuha (an island pOO miles uorln-oast «' Pernambucoi. It is said that Lie commander, at 6 in the evening, observed the raiders approaching. am/ as they did- so lie saw them Gearing ror action, inaiueuvriug for position' and almost immediately opening fire. It was then nightfall ; the cruiser returned the the, and the raiders lied, the cruiser pursuing. When near Fernando Noronha it was seen that one raider was sinking. The. others escaped under cover of the darkness. One of them is believed to have been beached in a battered condition, tim cruiser suffered slight- damage., and one man was killed and ;t few wounded.
