The KArr.miko arrived at Picton at noon yesterday ffom Lyttelton. She is loading a cargo of chaff for Onehnnga, The Kaituna arrived at New Plymouth at 8 a.m. yesterday from Picton. Flic is expected to leave, the 1 arannki port on Monday for West port, ansi Wellington. Mr R. Rogers has joined the Manourika as assistant purser. Mr R, J. Me'ntioiay has joined the Maori as third engineer in place of Mr R, Lewis. Air E." May has joined the Paieena as chief steward.” The auxiliary schooner Hula, now at Westport, will shortly go to Greymonth to load timber for Lyttelton.

Seventeen members of tho Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union were drawn in Inst week's military service ballot. Air R, b. Rutherford, fifth engineer of tho Mooraki, has come ashore. The fifth and sixth, engineers of tho vessel have gone up a step, and Mr N. C. Murray has signed on as seventh.

It is interesting to note that, two vessels, each drawing 16ft, berthed in the inner harbor, Napier, last month, while three others—Arahura 15ft, Kini 15ft Bin, Juki N gafcoro 15ft—with loss draught woptr to tho breakwater.

A painful accident occurred at Auckland on Tuesday to W. W. Wilson, second engineer of tho Mission steamer Southern Cross. When Air Wilson was unscrewing n, steam valve on top of the boiler it olew out and struck him in the lower part of the face, inflicting severe injuries. Mr Wilson’s face was also badly scalded by stea.ni and hot water from the valve. He was taken to the hospital, where his injuries were attended to.

Tno PilGlnnoFinn Mission pf.rnrncT Soutlieni Cross was to have left Auckland on Thursday f ov the Islands. The vessel has been Ivina in Auckland since October •waiting for the hurricane season to be over at the Islands. Her first call will be Norfolk Island, and after that she will cruise round the Melanesian Group on mission work. Hr 0. J. Wood, Bishop of Melanesia, v.Tio will travel by the steamer, will stay in the group, and not return with the vessel till next June. The following passengers will sa.il by tbe vessel Mrs A. 'G. Quintal and child. Misses Griffin, Walker, .and France, Sister Dorn, and Sir R. M. Jenkins. The Knramu left Greymouth at 6 a.m. to-day, coal laden, for Lyttelton. The Kahika arrived at Dunedin this morning from Westport, and berthed at the Birch street wharf to discharge a part cargo of coal. She will sail about Monday for Bluff to complete discharge. The vessel will afterwards load at Bluff for Wellington.

The Kaitangata is now expected to got away from Kaipara about the middle of next week for Sydney with a full cargo of timber.

The Kamona is loading at Lyttelton toand is to leave flic Canterbury port to-night for Auckland.

Tile Poherua is loading at Westport today for Lyttelton and Timaru.

The Kini is expected to leave Dunedin on Monday for Graymouth, where she will load for Oaniaru and Dunedin. The Karori is expected to leave Greymouth to-day for Sydney with a full load of timber.

The Kowhni is'-expected to leave Wellington to-day for Dunedin direct with general eargo. She should arrive here on Monday, and on completion of discharge will proceed to Greymonth. The Pal oona, which is at present undergoing overhaul at Port Chalmers, will leave there about the middle of next week for Lyttelton and Wellington.

The Mnnowai left Wellington last night for Napier. Gisborne, and Auckland. As the vessel is running a day late she will not reach Auckland until Monday. She is fixed to leave there on Tuesday after;I oon L* 1 ' -^ a - e d' Coast ports and Dunedin. r J ho Mnnowai is due hack hero on Sunday, February 25. The Government steamer Hinemoa returned to Wellington on Thursday morning from her visit of inspection to the Cook Strait lights. During the cruise a landing was made at The Brothers, the buoy overhauled at the Beef Barrels, the gas reservoir at Okun Point recharged, and. a lending eflected at Stephen’s Island. The weather was too rough to permit of a landing at Karori Rock, but otherwise conditions were good. The Hinemoa will go out again in a few da.vs.

The New Zealand Shipping Company announce that there will be no passenger steamer sailing in March. Further information can be obtained at the company’s office. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Maori arrived at Lyttelton at 7.25 a.m., and connected with the first express. VICTORIA FROM SYDNEY. Tlie 11 nddari-Parkor steamer Victoria, will make her reappearance at Dunedin to-morrow after an absence of several mouths. The vessel is from Sydney and northern ports. She left Wellington last evening for Dunedin direct, and should arrive here, late to-night or early to-mor-row morning. The Victoria has 560 tons of cargo to discharge, and is timed to sail again at 2 p.m. on Tuesday for East Coast ports, Auckland, and Sydney. WIMMERA REPLACES WESTBALIA. The local office of the Hnddart-Parker Company advise that the Wimmera has been fixed to leave Sydney on Wednesday, February 21, for Auckland, East Coast ports, and Dunedin, in place of the Wcstralia. The latter vessel is due at Sydney to-morrow from Auckland, and will lay up at the New South Wales port for overhaul. The Wimmera, which was previously announced ns having been fixed to leave Melbourne on March 3 for New Zealand ports, is reported by cable as having loft the Victorian port yesterday for Sydney. In consequence of the Wimmera being placed in the Sydney-New Zealand service, there are no vessels now engaged in the Melbourne-Wellington-Lyttelton-Dnnedin-Bluff service. The Paloon a has been withdrawn for other purposes, u”.-.i up to the present no arrangements have been completed for any steamer to enter this trade. The Wimmera should Dunedin on March 4. w ■ , AM.OKURA COMING SOUTH. Owing to the present being the hurricane season in the Konnadec Islands, the Government training steamer Amoknra has been diverted, and will now leave Wellington some time next week on another cruise round the southern outlying island's. It is understood that the radio plant, which was ordered some time ago for installation on the Amoknra, will come to lumd shortly. PASSENGERS FROM ENGLAND. The Union Company's collier Kninpoi arrived at Bluff at 10 a.m. to-day from Newcastle. The vessel brought a full cargo of coal for discharge at Bluff and Dunedin. She is expected to arrive here about Wednesday next, and will probably put out a quantity of her cargo at Port Chalmers. EXPLORING IS HIP AURORA TO REAIAIN AT WELLINGTON UNTIL SOLD. The Antarctic exploring ship Aurora, winch last week brought back to civilisation the surviving members of the Boss Sea. parly of the Sliac.klcton expedition, is at ' present engaged in discharging stores, etc., at the Wellington ferry wharf (says the ‘ Times ). She will probably bo thrown open to the public today and to-morrow, when visitors will have the opportunity of inspecting the ship and her equipment, as well as contributing towards a fund for (he benefit of the widow and children of Captain Mackintosh, who was the only one of the lost explorers to leave dependents. For the present, at any rate, the Aurora will remain in Wellington Harbor. To a ‘ Times ’ representative Mr Ernest Sbacklef on stated that the ship would stay at the northern port for at, least two or throe weeks. “My idea,'’ ho said, when questioned about future movements, “is to .sell her if I can get a price for her; otherwise she will stay at "Wellington indefinitely.” THE COMPOSITION OF FOG. i The result of investigation made on j hoard the American ice-patrol coast-guard j cutter Seneca show that- fog at sea contains about ono-fiftieth of an ounce of moisture per cubic yard, and the particles measure about ono five-thousandth of an inch in diameter. Three measurements daily were made to estimate the persistent nuclei, ami tire number was found to be normally about 16,000 to the cubic inch, never less than 6.500, and on three occasions more than 800,(XX).
