SCHOOL COMMITTEES

At the monthly meeting of the Albany Street Committee, held on Monday evening, the following motion was passed:—“ Tha- this committee learn with the deepest regret of the untimely death of Mr C. R. I). Richardson, chief inspector for the district of Otago, and realise that by his removal the cause of education lias lost ono of its ablest advocates, and tho teachers one of their best friends. Further, we wish to convey to Mrs Richardson and family our sincere sympathy with them in the irreparable loss they have sustained.” The monthly meeting of the Ravensbourne Committee was held last evening ; present—Messrs Dunn, Christensen, M’Ewen, Cameron, Robb, and Crosbie (chairman). The head master reported that the school reopened with an attendance of 198: roll number, 202. Ho enclosed a copy of the results of the proficiency examinations. The resignation of Miss E. Hutton, junior assistant, was received, she having been appointed sole teacher of St. Bathans School. It was resolved that Miss Hutton’s resignation be received with regret, and that she be written to thanking her for her able service* during her seven years’ term as second assistant, and that she bo congratulated ou lier promotion. It was resolved to write to the head master congratulating him on the success of pupils in the proficiency examination, all but one obtaining proficiency certificates. N. Trewn (the dux boy of the school) obtained a junior national scholarship, and F. Von Stunner (an ox-pipil) obtained a senior scholarship. It was resolved that the committee express thoir profound regret at the loss _ sustained in the death of Inspector Richardson, and that a letter of sympathy be sent to tho widow and family. The Picnic Committee rcported that, notwithstanding tho unfavorable weather on Saturday, the picnic had been very successful. The committee had fortunately secured the large hall at Evansdalc, and the children enjoyed themselves. Between the showers the sports and games were carried out, and a plentiful supply of fruit, lollies, and toys was distributed. The committee’s thanks are duo to Messrs Hudson, Young, Turner, Sullivan, M'Ewen, Barclay, and J. H. Wilkinson for donations for the picnic ; and tho Ravensboumo Boating Club, who donated the toys for the races.

The monthly meeting'of the Caver-; sham School Committee was held last ! night. The head master reported 6GG on the roll, with an average attendance of C4l. Miss Catherine Landroth had tendered her resignation, which the , committee accepted with regret. Mr X. J. Smith was appointed relieving teacher to Standard IV. during the

absence of Mr John Graham at tho front,_ Messrs _ Todd and M’Connell (Visiting Committee) reported on the state of the school, everything being in splendid order. Tho chairman (Mr Todd) made feeing reference to the severe loss to the cause of education by by the untimely death of Inspector Richardson.

At the monthly meeting of the Kaikorai School Committee the head master reported tho following additions to tho staff:—Mr Macqueen, fourth assistant; Misses Bastings, Munro, Fahey, and blaster Mason, pupil teachers. The school opened with 'a roll of 602, including about 50 nowpupils. National > scholarships were awarded to William Kennedy and Donald Stevenson, the former being top for Otago and the latter well up in the list. It w-as decided to record in the minutes the committee’s sincere regret on the loss sustained by tho death of Chief Inspector Richardson, a copy of the resolution to be sent to Mrs Richardson.
