MINING
CR-OMWELL NOTES.
Returns from the mining fields have been small during the last week or two. Both Shines were engaged repairing, hut No. 1 resumed work last week. No. 2, with a broken tumbler stage, is still waiting the arrival of a new one. The recent cold storms have had the effect of relieving the position on the Nevis field. Early last week snow fell on the hills, and with cold rain the water supply was sufficiently replenished to enable Iho claims to resume sluicing. ihe Rising Sun dredge, on the Clutha, after a period of big returns in January, struck a blank, but this did not continue long. week the dredge came along with 040r.. the ground improving. This ucek the machine will be occupied with a. certain amount of dead work in taking up the south-west corner of the cut, which will affect the return. After that, however, a payable run is anticipated, and many years’ work lies ahead before reaching the place where big returns were formerly won.—Own correspondent. February 12.
