A small quantity of goods was also taken from Air Aletcalfc's shop, such ns tobacco, cigarettes, ole. Strange to relate, the thieves overlooked a large haul of silver in the till in the Fruit shop, but secured tho paper money. The Misses Dredge live on the premises. hut they dosed the shop at 3 o’clock last night to attend a picture theatre. Mr Aletcalfe also closed hri premises at the usual hour, and it is presumed that the thief or thieves curried out their work between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., as tlie burglary was discovered shortly before the latter hour. The thieves evidently gained an entrance by scaling the adjoining roofs from King street. Onco they were in the back yard they had no difficulty in opening a, window and getting into a bad; room, A door dividing this room and tho shop was then forced with an iron bar or some oilier implement. and the thieves had a dear field in which to carry out their work. The police and detectives wore early on the scene, hut up to the present no arrests have been made.
