RACING AT RANDWICK
KILBOY WINS THE DERBY. OTHER NEW ZEALANDERS PROMINENT. After being twice postponed on account of heavy rain—this being the first occasion in tho history of the club on which nj* adjournment has beer, made for such a. cnvtrr —the A.J.C. races were begun yesterday. Tiro weather was fine, but naturally the going was heavy. The attendance was good. Kooya (N.Z.), the favorite in tho Hurdle Race, was unable to stall off Jack Rice. In the Derby, Kilboy (N.Zd, who ■was favorite, was running last in the early stages of the race, hut he joined the leaders when half a mile had been covered, and thereafter was not troubled. M'Lach lan. taking no chances, broke a long sped of bad luck. It was a popular win. Polycrates, the favorite in tho Epsom Handicap, put up a great finish against the outsider Panacro. St. Rosaline went to the front, and was never headed throughout, winning easily by five lengths. Time, Imin 29^600. NOTES BY “THE ADMIRAL.” New Zealanders were prominent in yesterday's running. Kooya, second in the Hurdle Race, won the Trial Hurdles at the recent C.J.C. National Meeting, and has been a successful performer on the flat in this country. Kilboy, winner of the Derby, was bred by Mr J. B. Reid at the Elderslie stud, North Otago, and won the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes, w.f.a. with penalties and allowances, at Riccarton last Easter when he beat Emperador, Koesian, Eligible, Good Hope, and others, cutting out the seven furlongs in Imin 27 l-ssec. He was taken to Sydney by Murray Hobbs, and after running unsuccessfully at Rand wick in the Chelsmford Stakes was sold last week to Messrs Wilfred Stead and Luttrell for 6,C00 guineas. Tho stake is s,CCosovs, less TOOsovs and 300sovs, fox place money, and 250sovs to the breeder of the winner. The late G. G. Stead won the A.J.C. Derby in 1905 with Noctuiform. Other New Zealandbred horses to score in this classic are Nordenfeldt (1885) and Bonnie Scotland (1894). Kilboy is engaged in the Melbourne Cup (5.15) and in the Victoria Derby. Eastcourt, the runner-up, won the Hawkesbury Guineas, Im, the other day; but Wolaroi (who some regarded as the champion three-year-old of the season) seems to have given a poor display. Two New Zealanders had the finish of the Spring Stakes to themselves. Sasanof _ recently won the Chelmsford Stakes, in which he heat Woorak by a narrow margin in a resolute finish, and this performance alone was sufficient to justify, his being elected favorite in yesterday’s event. Mr Stead’s gelding was engaged in the Metropolitan at 7.3, but was allowed to drop out. H© has 6.11 in the two cups—Caulfield and Melbourne. Bee will be best remembered by my readers as winner of last year’s Wellington Cup in the record time of 2min 31 3-ssec, and when raised a stone the next day ..she accounted for the W.R.C. Handicap. The daughter of Martian—Lady Disdain has 8.9 in the Metropolitan Handicap to be run tomorrow. _ Polycrates, runner-up for the Epsom, is an imported horse that had been heavily supported by the stable. The good form of the New Zealanders as sure to make them further friends for the remaining days of the A.J.C. meeting.
