Information was received at Gore yesterday that Corporal Valter Jovce, only son of Mr and Mrs Walter Joyce, of Gore, was killed in action in Franco on Ireptom oct 15. Tno late Corporal Jovce was a native of Gore, and was educated at the Goro Primary School and Gore High School. After leaving the High School he was employed in the Union Bank of Australia, Goro, being promoted to the head, office in Wellington. It was while in the bank’s employ in Wellington that in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. Corporal Joyce had not been long in camp ■when he was anpointed sergeant-payica-ster, and after Ids departure for the front was appointed corporal. Had he Jived he would have celebrated his twenty-fiyst birthday next Friday. Corporal H. R, (Jack) Austin, reported killed, left the Dominion with Lord Liverpool’s Own. He was born at Watson’s Bay, Sydney. _ He was educated at the Singleton Public School. After leaving he entered the Postal Department o*f Xew South Wales, but resigned in order to accompany his parents (Mr and Mrs 11. S. Austin), who were settling in Palmerston South. He took up drill with much zest, and was soon appointed a sergeant in the local Territorials. He was a general favorite. On attaining his 20th'birthday he enlisted, and had his 21st in the trenches. His two brothers (Sydney, who enlisted from Oama.ru, and Ralph,'who enlisted in Australia) have both been wounded, and are at present in the General Hospital, London. Their sister, Mrs E. Asliii, St. Clair, has received word that both are progressing favorably, and are hoping to be back at the front at an early date. Rifleman Ross Duncan (reported as wounded on the 15th September) is the younger son of Mr Geo. S. Duncan, consulting engineer of the Melbourne Tramways Trust. He was born in Melbourne, and educated at the Toorak Grammar School in that city. ■ On leaving school ha came over to Dunedin and joined tho stall" of Messrs Dalgety and Co.. Ltd., where he remained for a. period of eight years, and for a year prior to his leaving for the trout he was junior auctioneer to the firm of Messrs Strouach, Morris, and Co. He took a keen interest in sport, and was a member of the Volunteer Highland Rifles, Eoslyn Platoon Xational Reserve, and Roslyn Lawn Tennis Club. He has seen about a vear’s service, having left Xew Zealand last February with Ilia Fourth Battalion of Lord Liverpool’s Own, and since his armfll in France has been engaged as a sniper.
