UNIQUE POSITION OP NEUTRAL

SHIPPING.

_ Through theheavy_ Government reqnisitioning of British ships, neutrals have undoubtedly held a unique position, and will continue to do so whilst our shipping is thus engaged. But however much the demand, for tonnage exceeds the supply, it is questioned if tho position really warrants tho exorbitant rates and onerous conditions that owners rigidly insist on. Compared with the pre-war rate of 40s, to-day's 270s represents an increase of 575 per cent., which is phenomena! and exceeds the f.o.b. value. Neutrals have a further decided pull over the British owners in that they are not taxed to the same extent. There does not appear to be the slightest chance of any relaxation of rates; in fact, freights have every appearance of still further advancing, and in many quarters 300s is talked of quite confidently.—' Timber Trade Journal.'
