AUCKLAND NOTES,

[Special to the ' Stab.']

AUCKLAND. Wednesday.

Keen interest is taken in the chances of the local contestants for the Eastof Handicap, to be run on .April 22, and the horses most talked of are Colonel Soult, King Lupin, Tact, and Housewife, in that, -oider. Colonel Soult put up the best sprint at EJlerslio yesterday outside the trestles, doing six furlongs* in l.niiu IGsoc from a moving start. He is to lie ridden by T. Chaplin in the Easter H'andicup. Tact is doing good work, and vh? is very reasonably treated in tho jiip.Hmof handicap. She beat Lady Penury easiiv over c-ix furlongs on the sand on Saturday, and pleased her admirers in a si.\furlong run yesterday, in company -ivitli Loyal Arch, the pair taking Imin lfkcc out-Bide the trestles. Housewife it: expected at Elleislk l to undergo final preparations. Yesterday Merry J\oe and Pelf finished together at tho end of seven furlongs, outside the trestles, with Caftalia behind, and registered lmin 21ser for the last six furlongs. For the jockey premiership 13. Deeley has now como up closer, the figures beijiy J. O'Shea 54 wins and a dead-heat, Deeley 52 wins awl a dead heat.

SOCCER. In presenting the 26th annual report the Otago Football Association state that owing to the war a serious set-back waa suffered last season. Very little interest was taken in tho senior competition, and tho number of teams in the various grades were eight fewer than in tho previous year. The change of tha Wednesday halfholiday to Saturday necessitated the dls« solution of the Wednesday Association. Ouo club—tho Post and Telegraph—joined the Saturday Association, while several Wednesday players associated themselves with the various clubs. Tho committee appreciated tho good work accomplished by the Referees' Club. Tho offences committed by players were very few. Thn association's lease of the Caledonian. Ground having expired, and in the cireuni* stancesof there probably being no eenior competition from which 'revenue could bo derived, the committee could not see their way clear to renew the lease. The magnificent manner in which players riavo rallied round the Flag in tho Empire's timn of trouble calls for the heartiest comi mendation. Two clubs alone have supplied over 150 men. The school competition* 1 were not quite so successful as in tho pro< vious year, on account of the school banda talcing part in the various processions arranged by tho Wounded Soldiers' Carnival Committees. Twenty-five teams competed, as against 22 foj the previous season. Th<i three new schools entering tho competitions were Caversham, Concord, and Anderson Bay.

In the handicaps for the President's Trot at Meeting, published yesterday, Kiwi and The Sprinter wore included by mistake, and Gold Patch should have been Silver Patch. Glad Eve (2(?sec) was accidentally omitted from the list.

At a meeting of the committee of the Gisbornc. Racing Ciub last week it v.-sr, decided that the whole of the net profit? from the steeplechase meeting to be hc'.ij on Juno 15 and 17, with a minimum of £SOO, he donated to the wounded soldier?' fund.
