A TURKISH OFFICER'S LOVE OF HOME
»■ _ LETTER TO HIS WIFE, FOUND OX HIS BODY AT ACHI BABA.
[Translated by G. F. Parkixsox. of C.-ui-terbury Mounted Rifles, ' Mudros Lemnos, January, 1916.] Ayesha, the- Angel of Beautv.—How pleased 1 am with the gods and Allah fof the letter which I received from vou, my dear, and also that my two little darlings are- well and happy. ° Oh, Ayesha, my morning" star, what reply can I give you. God has so far granted me health and strength, and has brought mo safely, but where can it possibly end? We are bombarded here by the English—no rest we receive and very little lood, and our men are dving iu hundreds from disease. Discontentment is also beginning to show itself among the men, and 1 pray God to bring this all to an end. I can see lovely Constantinople in rums, our children put to the swordnothing but some great favor from .Allah can stop it.
lhese English are very, persistent, and there is no fear of death for them. Apparently they are very cruel, they watch us like wolves m the night, and are upon us like the Devil. Oh, why did we join in this -wicked war? England was very partial to us in the past, and we may therefore expect no mercy from one we have so badly injured.
Ayesha, my Star of Light, call on Maku the magician, and seo from Mm what my future holds. Prior to this kiss my two angels, Hesta 11a and Agus, eyes, mouth ears, hands, and feet, and pray that the good God may keep me safe. Now, Ayesha, I must take leave from you, as the sun is sinking, and I must away to my devotions, in which I always pray for you, my Morning Star, and for my two angels of light. God bless you, my Ayesha. I( wish, I wish I were at home to give you my adorations.—From your husband, Mtjsta Mahomet, Captain, "l3th Turkish Infantry, Achi Baba. Xo my highborn, royal wife, Ayesha.
