A DESERVED REBUKE
On board the Britir-li ship Oanopic, when she sailed from New York on March 3, were _ a passenger and wife (hailing from Brooklyn) who knew that the vessel would mount guns at Gibraltar, and that therefore she was apt to be sunk at sight by a hostile submarine. The man declared that this possibility made the voyage all the more pleasantly exciting, and that they looked forward" to having an adventure. These people had no pressing errand in Europe. They did not have to leave their Brooklyn horn© at ail; and if their errand | had been imperative they could have as j easily sailed on any one of a dozen un- j armed and therefore safe steamers These two Americans deliberately thrust themselves into peril; yet if they do happen to be dro\vr:ed there will be fresh complications, and there might be war. The man in question devotes his time and fortune to the hobby of collecting old bottles, from which, hot it is easy to estimate his immense usefulness to the nation. But valuable to the natior. as is such an intelligent and product, ve career, *-• ciiink that it is asking rather too mach to sacrifice mar.v thousands of American boys and many millio-ts of American wealth to avenge the loss of this eminent citizen if he har>pens to be lost while on a foolbardv and absolutely unnecessary errand. Tho Vaiu truth is that these Americans and :tll other Americans who risk their lives and their country's peace and security io: the sake oj morbid excitement are unpatriotic citizens, are very bad citizens. Tlmy are emphatically, a-s Senator Stone
