SYDNEY, April 13. (Received April 13, at 9.30 a.m.) Being opposed to such large commitments in war time, the New South Wales Legislative Council threw out tho North Shore bridge scheme, involving an outlay of £1,750,000.

Ho urged the need for private and public economy, and depicoated the extravagant expenditure of public money. This was vie ol the reasons that led to Lis asking his co-directors to como down to a 3 per cent valuation of tho association's assets and to withdraw £IOO,OOO from tha hinds to strengthen tho inner reserves.

RAILWAY CONTRACTOR KILLED,
SYDNEY, April 13. (Received April 13, at 9,30 a.m.) Mr James Angus, railway contractor, 81 years of age, has been run over and killed on the railway. In his younger days W was prominently connected with tha'New Zealand railways' development.
