The Oaniaru Presbytery have nominated the Rev. A. Gray, of P.avcnshourne, as Moderator of the General Assembly for 1917.
Australian papers report that the Be v. Paul H. Joseph. Congregational minister at Hindmarsh (Adelaide) has been left a fortune by a New Zealander to whom ho did a kindly action some years and that ho is building a magnificent citv temple and has bought the residence of the late Chief Justice as an adunct to the ti-mple. He is resigning from the pastorate. Mr ,>oseph is, 28 years of age. He married the adopted 'daughter of Dr Bevan.
An amazing incident recently occurred at Brisbane, reports an Australian paper. A party of holiday-makers fishing in Moreton Bay. and requiring some small mullet for bait, applied to two fishermen v.ito were busy netting. They proved to be Russians not long resident in Australia. As it was holiday time, and the anglers wished also to show somo courtesy to their Allies., the Russians wore invited to come aboard and have a drink. They declined, with the explanation: "Our countrymen, at home are not drinking now, so we must not drink." Russians, without a doubt, are ignorant {satirically remarks the journal), or they would long ere this have picked up the habits—tho fishing habits—of a highly- civilised people,'
