THEHOWARD RIVER GOLDFIELD
The rich goldfield recently discovered at the Howard River (Nelson) is about 16 miies from Glenhope. Tho ground is very rich, and already there are close on 100 diggers on the field. Quite a revival of the old-time alluvial digging days is being experienced, and all the daims are paying handsomely. The gold is very coarse and easily saved. Heavy nuggets are plentiful, the largest so far weighing Boz. Men are arriving daily, and it is expected that quite 500 will he on the field before Christmas., Many old West Coast diggers who have been farming in the district for years have been attracted by the new find, and have packed up and left once more for the diggers’ camp. One typical old West Coaster, although three “years over the allotted span of three-score years and ten, is once more working a Very rich claim alone. Everything has to bo carried for three miles up hill and over a rough bush track. Men are engaged in carrying heavy loads of stores, such as sugar, flour, camp ovens, potatoes, sheet iron, etc., and other necessaries. As much, as £I,OOO worth of'gold has already been taken from one claim. Gold, it i’s said, is to be found everywhere for many miles around.
